Time to climb on the Sage Rosenfels bandwagon

In Tarvaris Jackson's short, three-year career as an NFL quarterback, he's rarely been good, occasionally been okay and frequently been mediocre-to-awful. Yet, the Vikings coaching staff - and Brad Childress in particular - has mostly stood by him, assuring Viking fans he's working hard to become the competent quarterback they think he can be.

So what do we make of this?

When a respected veteran like Pat Williams calls you out for not working hard enough, it's time to re-assess your commitment to your craft. It also makes you wonder if Jackson will ever realize what it takes to even be an average NFL quarterback if he needs to be reminded constantly by an All-Pro of this fact and he still doesn't heed the advice.

I may have doubts about Sage Rosenfels' ability to avoid throwing interceptions. But I have no doubt he will put in the work required to be a starting NFL quarterback. Which means Sage Rosenfels should win the starting job this summer over Jackson. And that makes me smile a bit.

I think it was Brian Billick who said something like "I can tell if a QB will be good or bad when he plays his 24th-30th games". Hasn't Jackson started around 25 games?

I like Rosenfels and wouldn't mind seeing him win the job and start. But I wish Jackson had gotten more games last year, because it's hard to give up on a QB that has been so heavily invested in until the 24-30 window can be analyzed as a whole. It would be bad to waste the first 4-5 weeks of the season getting losses with Jackson, but I think even Jackson should get 3 wins in the first 5 weeks against that schedule. How well he plays? We'd have to see. If not well, then Minnesota can confidently get rid of him and move forward. It would be devastating to have him ride the bench this year, go to another team, and find success.

I'm sorta with the second commenter on that thread:

"Not that I’m a Jackson apologist, and Williams is probably right, but how does Williams know how much time TJ is putting in?"

And really, the last thing any Vikings player needs to be doing right now is giving our QBs shit. They get plenty of that already.

Billick also said on KFAN with Barriero "As my track record in Baltimore shows, I don't know a thing about the QB position"....and no I did not make that up.

I'd rather see Sage get the call on opening day, and I think Favre is an upgrade over both of the SageVaris Jackenfels. But if 4 doesn't come here, i hope it's Sage. I'm not a TJack hater, but he's had his chances. it should be noted that Philly's Defense made Eli Manning look silly in the playoffs last year, so TJack wasn't alone in that regard.

here's a tip of the cap to Favre coming in for at least a year, and if not...time to see if the Rosencopter has what it takes....

It was Billick who said that. He also said he heard it from Bill Walsh, a guy who DID know a thing or two about evaluating QB's (especially in a WC offense).

Williams wasn't really questioning Jackson's work ethic in my opinion. The context reads more like a "I encourage him to keep working harder every time I see him" kind of statement to me. At any rate, Childress has already stated his support for Jackson's work ethic, something that hasn't been questioned in his 3 years in the league.

Give Jackson a shot, this is his year.
