I apologize for the lack of activity on the blog this week. I'm not pulling a Pacifist Viking, I've just been busy at work again.
Anyway, I'll keep this one short.
Vikings fans have heard all year how dominant our defensive line is. The Fox Network even had a nickname contest for the unit going on during one Vikings game (I think it was against Detroit). The Vikings also led the league in sacks.
But sacks don't tell the whole story when it comes to a defensive line's effectiveness. However, Football Outsiders published it's quarterback hurries stats this week and they add more credence to the belief out there that the Vikings defensive line is, you know, kinda pretty good.
One other thing. Based on these stats and what I saw all year, the Vikings should think about signing Ray Edwards to a lengthy extension. Now.

It will be interesting to look at those numbers when they finish all 32 teams. If the Vikings players still rank as high, as they said they prorated the season and as we know the Vikings were very streaky this season.
I agree with you though they do need to resign the man as he had his best year and seems to be getting better. Now that the NFL is living without a CBA and the Vikes will be limited in the free agency market. It seems to me that it is more important now to resign our restricted free agents.

Edwards is only 24 or 25 despite playing four seasons now. His best football is clearly ahead of him. The same could be said for Chad Greenway and Sidney Rice, but the Vikings seem to be in no hurry to sign any of these players to extensions.
We'll see what the end of February and early March brings.
Since the Wilf family has taken hold of the rudder of the Viking ship. They have been very free with the check book. Along with Rob Brzezinski managing the cap, the Vikings as a whole have normally signed their younger players to long term contracts. How this uncapped season is going to affect the Vikes is beyond me. I do know though they won't be involved in the Free Agency market very heavily this year so locking down our own should be priority one.
As far as long term affect of the Collective Bargaining Agreement goes I'm sure that the owners have this all ready figured out. Most of the owners are business men and they don't enter in to situations like this without having a plan, and all of the scenarios figured out.
